- Gary Taubes, a researcher writer, has spent five years putting together a book, on our subject: Good Calories, Bad Calories:
Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Control and Disease.
Well, he does just that.
We have never reviewed a book before here staying away from that.
However, since he is basically the only one saying the same thing as what I have been telling you and as my 3 years of research indicates, I was anxious to read the book.
So here is what we found in between the covers.
This is a very heavy read for the public but he has a lot of good message and you may be able to wade thru it.
He never throws in any far out conclusions of his own particularly, you have to wade thru a zillion peoples studies, and published versions of their recommendations and his review of
based on fact or not.
He tells you where he thinks it all went astray.
The conventional wisdom, is that body fat is caused by eating too many calories, not burning enough
(lack of exercise) (lazy, sedentary) and surplus unburned calories turns to and is the cause of you getting fat.
Probably about 100 feet of books carrying on about how that works to
fix your weight problem, all lined up on the shelf down at the library.
Here in contrast is a few quotes from the new book here, since Taubes questions the belief that weight gain is caused by inactivity (or by
over consumption).
"Expending more energy than we consume does not lead to long-term weight loss; it leads to hunger."
"neither eating less nor exercising more will lead to long-term weight loss, as the body naturally compensates."
What I interpret Taubes as saying in this book regarding this is: that if you hold intake constant and increase activity, hunger and a slowed metabolism will follow ? which will stymie weight loss.
This is basically clarifying up what I say which is that with all this conventional advice, you are mostly wasting your time, you might have some short term illusionary victories but your body
will do its thing and defeat you in the long run. My long term technique is that you need to learn to work with your body and not have a constant duel. (where in the long term you will
always wind up the loser).
More of his clarifying, this direct quote is one of his conclusions....
As I emerge from this research, though, certain conclusions seem inescapable to me, based on the existing knowledge:
- Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease, or any other chronic disease of civilization.
- The problem is the carbohydrates in the diet, their effect on insulin secretion, and thus the hormonal regulation of
homeostasis "the entire harmonic ensemble of the human body. The more
easily digestible and refined the carbohydrates, the greater the effect on our health, weight, and well-being.
- Sugars, "sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup specifically" are particularly harmful, probably because the combination of fructose and glucose simultaneously elevates insulin levels while
overloading the liver with carbohydrates.
- Through their direct effect on insulin and blood sugar, refined carbohydrates, starches, and sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease and diabetes. They are the most likely
dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and the other chronic diseases of civilization.
- Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating, and not sedentary behavior.

He is a lone author in not seeing damage from animal fat. My belief is you can eat all the lard you want. ( and my recent ancestors did just
that.) the trouble ONLY began when we started eating corn oil, crisco, margarine etc because of their ad people and publicists selling (planting stories etc) the public on the idea that animal
fat was bad for you, we will rescue you, eat our wonderful health food stuff.
Turns out to be the very thing that is killing us and you are a "slow learner" still buying the idea. Taubes clarifies some of this.
He gets into who "sold the public" on what and why.
Incidentally, the toast on the cover, is the bad calories and the butter is the good calories.
His book is the first to say totaling calories, figuring up how many you ate or you burned is in the long run a waste of time.
What counts is "what kind" of calories"
Bad is carb... good is fat, protein,.
Two things I do not agree with 100 per cent ... or I should say I carry a little further... he says the high sugar and high insulin are the problem all right.. the difference I say is your body
can handle that if spread it out over time etc, my point is it is the high sugar "peaks" that are really causing the problem.
Of course, if you follow thru and actually get rid of the bad calories,
you do not have the peaks, so there you go. He also says that research over adding fiber, ballyhoo, has shown fiber helps little or not at all except in preventing constipation.
My point is fiber is very important to any obese person or diabetic that wants to stop problems by
leveling off high sugar peaks, is by simply adding fiber to anything they are
eating or just before etc, slows the digestion speed so much, thereby diluting the rush enough that you can cut harmful peaks down to
"reasonable peaks."
