We have all gone thru great frustration trying to lower our blood sugar. We try new things but all of these things to take etc that others said worked have not done a thing for me. I must find something else cause this is not working for me.
Wish I had known this long ago, and it would have saved me a lot of frustration.Recently came across it very clearly spelled out. Medications work almost immediately. The supplements and all of these "lower your blood sugar things" you learn from studies," all can be expected to take up to 60 days before you will see visible results. An employee who has diabetes was trying a mixture of supplements available in a packaged form, emailed and said it was apparently not a good one because it was not doing a thing for him, and requested I find him something else. When you expect results right away and your blood sugar stays the same you figure this is not working. Better find something else.
That is why we say you may need to go on metfomin or some medication to get your blood sugar under immediate control and then taper it off to none, gradually, as your other affects start to kick in.
Especially Gps. Diabetes specialists will often start you right off with Insulin, get your blood sugar under immediate control, give your pancreas a recuperating break by picking up part of the load.
The reasoning is, his pancreas is wearing out and having a hard time keeping up with his high insulin resistance. By taking insulin it gives the pancreas a break and it still picks up the fine doing but is not carrying the whole load and gets a little relief.
I find this idea sound in that they let my BG run over 250 for a month or two while the tried out medications to see what worked or what it took. Meantime, this continued high blood sugar was doing me harm. It should have been brought under control instantly with insulin and fine tuned it later with medication or supplements, exercise diet etc.
Medications are in contrast a "right now" thing. Expect to see results on all others very slowly. I started out with a 250, After going off medication I had to really watch my diet, exercise plus supplements etc to get under 180. After sixty days I was under 150 and now run between 90 and 135. It was a slow "come down" process. My A1c started out at 10.5 and three months ago test was down to 5.8. My goal is 5 and I may be there but am waiting for the first anniversary of my treatment and want to test and compare then. I have gone off many things that I did not think were working because I did
not realize this delay.
Many things had such a reputation for improving your blood sugar and came up in book after book, so many authors recommending them that I stayed on them anyway fortunately. It is very difficult to determine what is working and what is not. Just remember, the delay is common affect of many great aids to lowering you
blood glucose levels and do not quit just because you do not see immediate
results.. It still disappoints me when I add something new in that I do not see my
blood sugars respond within days, even though I now know better then to expect
that. You need to know the correct amounts to be taking of each supplement etc. Very often advertised mixture products have some of the important supplements in a mixed tablet but the amount of many important is so small some refer to it as "pixie dust." It is included really in name only. Usually I check several books for authors recommendations and see what the general consensus is. For example chromium varies quite a bit in listings suggesting the amount daily. But then you have to also consider are you taking this as a crash program to get BG under control or are you just doing maintenance. I found one new book that says you can go up to 1000 mg on it and on alpha lopic acid. The two supplements really useful in getting faster control of your out of bounds BG. (blood glucose or blood sugar, same thing) So read up on these supplements and make a decision on amounts based on your current goal and situation and do not exceed safe amounts.. Now you grow to resent all this "extra" burden diabetes has put on your life. Get all this down to a routine daily habit, and your "habit" system will take over and it will not be so much work.
Therefore, what I am doing is sorting thru all this stuff for you (doing it for myself but I share it with you) and bringing you up to date on what you need to know as we hear about the latest. ....and .... I am also constantly developing new information sources and read what new authors have to say. You hear here what I determine is important that you should know.. but do not have the time to uncover.
