Been Working For Centuries, Studies Now Show and Verify Why
We have been reading books on people that live to be over 100 and a good many of them attribute their longevity to eating an onion a day and/or several cloves of garlic daily.
Now studies back this up and help understand why it works.
Garlic and onions both have the power to boost hydrogen sulfide production in your body. This now explains why a garlic-rich diet (and onions) appears to protect against various cancers, including breast, prostate and colon cancer, say the authors of several studies.. Higher hydrogen sulfide might also protect the heart, according to other experts. Another garlic study has found that injecting hydrogen sulfide into mice almost completely prevented the damage to heart muscle caused by a heart attack.
It has been known garlic and onions were important and had health benefits for centuries, “Even the Greeks would feed garlic to their athletes before they competed in the Olympic games.”
Most recent studies included the equivalent of about two garlic cloves a day…
However, In such countries as Italy, Korea and China, where a garlic-rich diet seems to be protective against disease, per capita consumption is as high as eight to 12 cloves per day.
While that may sound like a lot of garlic. it is easy to increase your consumption to five or more cloves a day if you use it every time you cook and even use it and onions in salads.
Many home cooks, mistakenly cook garlic immediately after crushing or chopping it, which is incorrect. (get one of these tiny garlic presses….)
To maximize the health benefits, of onions and garlic you should crush the garlic at room temperature and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes.
That timing is an important key that we can not over emphasize, and triggers an enzyme reaction that boosts the healthy compounds. You often do these things after reading about them but miss the key little detail such as this delay, users have known for centuries, that makes them work.
Onion eaters claiming extended longevity, usually say that eating a large slice a day was key to their success in outliving all the relatives.
Garlic can cause indigestion, but for many, the bigger concern is that it can make your breath and sweat smell like Onions or “garlic”.
Eating fennel seeds some say overcomes the disadvantage of odor from eating garlic and onions. Not tested this but pass it on.
Both onions and garlic seem to have the ability, according to studies, (like dark chocolate we advocate as a life extender), to “open up your pipes” and it is this action that apparently makes the difference.
It’s still not clear if the beneficial compounds found in garlic remain potent once it’s been processed into a pill so best stay with the natural for now.
Both onions and garlic are inexpensive and making them a daily habit should not be a difficult, but apparently a very worth while life style change.
The formula here is to go with “What Works” and there is little doubt that garlic and onions have proven benefits, that have been known for centuries. We read study after study verifying the various benefits…so this is not some fad, this is handed down for centuries and is now verified as a very significant contributor to health, with little adverse side affect other then odor.
