A New book is coming out this spring by Mark Hyman, MD who is a pioneer in functional medicine, practicing physician and best-selling author and has a new book "The Ultra Simple Diet" and he discloses a lot of what you need to know. Dr. Hyman, in an article promoting his new book suggests the following tests for people to prevent getting into full blown diabetes. His books says that most doctors don't worry until the blood sugar is over 110 -- or worse, over 126, which is diabetes. Instead, his book says,"I recommend early testing with anyone who has a family history of type 2 diabetes, belly fat, or abnormal cholesterol -- regardless of your blood sugar level. Here is what this doctor says in the article promoting his forthcoming new book, he suggests you Ask your doctor for these tests:
End of the good docs test listings....in his new book....This is an authoritive source that is one of the first I have seen that really makes an issue of your insulin level. (or even admits it is a factor of concern.) My experience is that my doctors, (two) would not even request an insulin test which my research indicated was key to long term damage,I had to insist and refuse to do any tests unless that was included. My first one came in at 18 and he said that was fine. That 16 was normal. In fact he had previously ordered a prescription that raised my insulin level as a method of controlling my blood sugar. After reading up on it, I refused to continue taking it.Shortly thereafter I went off all medication and control my blood sugar on my own which is another story. My suggestion is if over 50 and at all overweight you get these tests promptly to see where you are with diabetes.I had gone to two doctors (I have an office in two different states) and complained to both of diabetes symptoms, tingling in the feet, night sweats, going to the bathroom every two hours, 60 pounds over weight and over 70, all pointing to diabetes and neither one even suggested testing for diabetes. One sent me to a prostrate specialists for some rather elaborate painful tests that turned up negative. My diabetes was much later uncovered by myself using a finger prick test meter belonging to a relative with type one. My blood sugar was 240, far exceeding hers. Some experts indicate, and I determined from my research, that I likely had diabetes 3 years before my self uncovered diagnosis.Three tests that I pay close attention to, with regular tests, My triglycerides were above 250, now down to 37. My insulin 18, last reading at 5.5. and my A1C....7 got down to 5.5 now back up to 6. All better then I ever was on medication. My research indicates that an A1c at 7 is in the sharp rise to damage area and needs an immediate fix. If you stop it in time...reading this publication was the best thing you ever did for your health.
